Bad news from ultrasound

Lucy had an appointment for her abdominal ultrasound today.  This was the last step before scheduling her surgery for amputation.  Unfortunately, the ultrasound revealed a mass on her bladder.  The vet took a urine cytology to be sent to NCSU so hopefully we’ll have the results of that by the end of the week.  Either it will come back as the same kind of sarcoma that she has already been diagnosed with, or it could be a different type of cancer all together.  Luckily Lucy isn’t showing any symptoms of having any issues but that’s also why this came as such a shock.  However, with this new development, the vet said that she didn’t see a reason to go ahead with the amputation.  So now we wait…

It’s a weird feeling to be disappointed about not amputating your dog’s leg.  As much as I wasn’t looking forward to it, I felt that it was Lucy’s chance to finally be cancer free.  I’m not really sure where to go from here.

I am so sorry to hear this, but will keep hoping that the news will be good. There have been a number of dogs on this site who have not been able to go through with amputation for various reasons and are trying other forms of treatment, so please do not lose hope. The fact that she is doing well otherwise is a good sign.

Oh what a shock, I’m sorry! I hope your oncologist has some ideas. As otisandtess mentioned, others have been able to go the palliative route without amputation and enjoyed a longer quality of life. We have our paws crossed that Lucy continues to feel good and has many good days ahead. Stay strong and keep us posted.

So sorry to hear this! Hopefully you’ll get good news soon. As the others have said there’s still some options even if you can’t do the amp. Praying for good days for Lucy and you. Hugs!!

    Keri & Lucy,
Well, well Miss Lucille aren’t you full of surprises. I’ve been thinking about you two all day. Keri, I know how awful it must have been for you to hear about a new mass – and I wish I could give you a hug. I know that wasn’t the news you were expecting but you made me laugh – you’re right it would be a very weird feeling to be disappointed that you are not amputating her leg – but cancer introduces a whole world of “alternative thinking”.
Whatever the cytology shows you and Lucy will move forward together. You have handled everything that has been thrown at you and I have no doubt that you will be able to research your options and make the best decision for your girl.
I am so happy that Lucy isn’t showing any symptoms from this new mass. She was just happy when you came to pick her up after the ultrasound and probably quite happy to hear that the amputation was on hold.
Please keep us posted. I will look forward to learning more about you and Lucy and will be hoping for good news.
Give that girl a kiss from me.
    Love,
    Amy & Rusty
